Even World Travelers Have Easy E-mail Access
Question:
We have great news, the answer is YES! Most large internet providers will offer what is called webmail. Web-based email or webmail is a term referring to an email service intended to be primarily accessed via a web browser, as opposed to through an application such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express or Mozilla's Thunderbird.
If you use Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail, that is a perfect example of webmail or we-based email. That would mean you check your email using a browser like internet explorer or Mozilla's Firefox so no matter where you are in the world you can continue to check your email as if you would at home.
Now if you are using Outlook Express, Outlook or another program installed on your home computer and want to use webmail to access your email, there are a few issues you should be aware of. Because you are accessing your email directly, what you do in your webmail session may not be reflected in outlook on your home computer. For example:
- Any emails you send in webmail will not show up in your sent mail box at home.
- Emails in your webmail inbox may not be the same as your inbox at home.
- Your address book in your webmail will not be the same at your computer at home.
Just be aware that you are accessing your email directly, so for example normally you would get your mail from the post man but instead you're going straight to the sorting plant to pick it up and therefore it will not be 100% in synchronization with your email on your home computer. (Yes technology is very confusing!)
If you're not sure how to access your email through a web browser we have a list for the 2 major service providers in town and what address to visit in order to check your email from a location other than your home computer and without using remote access.
- Rogers contracts all their email services to yahoo. So in order to access your Roger's email through a web browser simply visit: http://mail.yahoo.com and enter in your Roger's email address and password.
- Symaptico contracts all their email services to Hotmail. So in order to access your Sympatico email thought your web browse simply visit: http://www.hotmail.com and enter in your Sympatico email address and password. Please note that your internet access login and password are different from your email login and password.
For other providers in town they will more then likely offer webmail. Simply contact technical support for your provider and ask them how to access it.
If you're not sure what your email login and password is, simply call technical support for your internet service provider and have them reset it. Just remember if you do reset your email password, your home computer will bug you to enter the new password in order to access your email again.
