Windows Vista requirments

Question:

I have an older computer and was thinking about upgrading the RAM on my computer so that I can make the move from Windows XP to Windows Vista. For starters I'm not even sure my Windows XP is running up to speed and was wondering what you think the minimum amount of ram should be used in order to run either of these operating systems successfully?

Answer:

Although there are many components within a PC that should be considered when deciding on what specifications are adequate enough for you. Unfortunately our article is limited in its length so I will give you a breakdown that is short but sweet.

Before I begin I must forewarn you that upgrading to Windows Vista may ultimately cause you some serious headaches just after you think it's so cool. Although Microsoft did an excellent job making changes by adding better security, a flashy interface, an improved Windows Explorer, integrated search, and a Sidebar with gadgets. Sounds exciting? Well of course it is for an advanced computer enthusiast, but the changes in menu titles and placement of file folders etc. you may find yourself frustrated that they changed some of the little things that you have spent the previous 9 yrs. learning. That would be like an automotive company deciding that their new car model is going to have the gas pedal on the left and the break on the right. What?

However, as Vista continues to be debugged it will become a very powerful Operating System that can and will be utilized by millions of people around the world. As for the question at hand, I will also validate my point by showing you the difference in the amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) requirements that industry professionals such as us recommend.

Windows XP:

256 MegaBytes of RAM - This is the bare minimum and don't expect your computer to perform very well.

512 MegaBytes of RAM - Will work great for the average user, windows will be able to multitask quickly and surfing the net will be even faster.

1 GigaBytes of RAM (1024 MegaBytes) or more - Is great if you are doing image or video editing. These programs require a lot of memory.

Windows Vista:

1 GigaBytes of RAM (1024 MegaBytes) - Will allow your vista operating system to work, but mutlitaksing and surfing the web might be a bit slow.

2 GigaBytes of RAM (2048 MegaBytes) - Is perfect for the average user, multitasking will be quick and applications will respond in a snap

4 GigaBytes of RAM (4096 MegaBytes) or more - Again for video or image editing. If you are a major gamer you will want at least this amount.

As you can see, Windows Vista requires much more Random Access Memory in order to function properly. Please note that there are a number of different types of RAM (not just sizes) such as SDRAM, DDR, RDRAM, DDR2, and DDR3. Do your research or contact a professional such as ourselves for help. If you do decide to upgrade please take our advice and meet these requirements or you may be sorely disappointed.
